Peteris Sprogis was elected Bishop (President) of the Union of Baptist Churches in Latvia in 2006. He soon became keenly aware of the issues facing his denomination and society.

“It would have been easy for the Baptists to continue living our comfortable denominational life,” he said.  “However, it did not take a prophet to see that, if we continued in the same manner, we did not have any future. What was needed was a daring recognition of problems and a vision worth for me and others to live and die for. None of us would be ready to live and die for maintenance of a denominational system. We all want to live for something that is worth dying for.”

Need for Change

When I (Peteris) was elected to the position of Bishop of the Union in 2006, I became keenly aware of the issues of our denomination and society. It would have been easy for the Baptists to continue living our comfortable denominational life. However, it did not take a prophet to see that, if we continued in the same manner, we did not have any future. What was needed was a daring recognition of problems and a vision worthy enough for me and others to live and die for. None of us would be ready to live and die for maintenance of a denominational system. We all want to life for something that is worth dying for.

The role and influence of churches in society was declining. Many churches continued to hold onto the mentality of holy, fortified fortresses which had helped them to survive the Soviet times. Their gates now were locked from inside and they had essentially turned into prisons. The Church seemed to live in a denial of the reality of its problems as well as those of our society. There were about 6,000 Baptists in Latvia with its total population exceeding 2 million: what is the point of our history, traditions and values if more and more people are not reached for Christ and discipled as His followers?

Kāda ir jūsu līdzšinējā ekumenisko attiecību pieredze Latvijā?
Par ekumeniskajām attiecībām Latvijā mēs patiešām varam būt pateicīgi. Mēs mēdzam pierast pie labā un nepamanīt, ka varētu būt arī citādi. Līdzīgi kā ģimenē, kurā ir abi vecāki, kas mīl savus bērnus, un tas šķiet pats par sevi saprotams. Kad parunājos ar cilvēkiem ārpus Latvijas, izrādās – tas nav pašsaprotami, ka baptistu bīskaps var būt pie viena sarunu galda, pārrunājot valstij svarīgas lietas, vai piedalīties kopīgā dievkalpojumā. Turklāt šīs nav formālas, bet ir tiešām sirsnīgas attiecības, kad vēlam cits citam labu. Domāju, ka to ir veidojuši aizvadītie padomju gadi, kad draudzēm vajadzēja turēties kopā, jo ienaidnieks bija ārpusē un nebija laika meklēt ienaidnieku savās rindās. Otrs veicinošais faktors ir tas, ka nav vienas dominējošās konfesijas. Lauku reģionos reizēm dominējošas tendences parādās, bet Rīgā ir jūtams līdzsvars. Vēl ietekmējis tas, ka visi Baznīcu vadītāji ir teoloģiski konservatīvi, ir bijusi veselīga ortodoksija. Citās valstīs ekumene ir apdraudēta, jo ir baznīcu novirzieni, kas aizved nepieņemamos liberālos uzskatos.

Ar kristībām Užavas upē 29. augustā, kad ticīgo pulkam pievienojās 87 jauni kristieši, ar grandioziem 7. Dziesmu svētkiem Ventspils Olimpiskajā hallē, kurā piedalījās vairāk nekā 2 tūkstoši dalībnieku, Latvijas baptistu saime šogad svinēja pastāvēšanas 150. jubileju. Šajā pat laikā notiekošais Latvijas baptistu draudžu savienības kongress atkārtoti uz četriem gadiem par savu vadītāju ievēlēja 37 gadus jauno bīskapu Pēteri Sproģi. „Svētdienas Rīts” devās uzzināt, kādas būs jaunā bīskapa darba prioritātes, un kurp viņš vedīs Latvijas baptistus.
